Youth Champions was created to support Los Angeles teens who often shoulder adult responsibilities long before graduation. Many juggle part-time jobs or caregiving roles that limit their access to traditional after-school opportunities. The program steps into that gap with a simple model: compensate students for their time, then use that time to build skills that can change their long-term trajectory.
Participants can earn up to $1,000 across the 24-week program, but what keeps them engaged is the structure around it — mindset development, financial literacy, and exposure to career pathways they may have never seen up close. The emphasis is on treating teens as earners and decision-makers, not recipients of charity.
Inside the Springboard Summit: A Launchpad for Student Leadership and Confidence
The Springboard Summit is the centerpiece of Youth Champions’ annual programming, bringing together students from across Los Angeles for a day dedicated to developing confidence, leadership, and a broader sense of what’s possible. More than 250 teens participated in this year’s Summit, a reflection of both demand for the program and the appetite students have for spaces where they can grow beyond their immediate circumstances.
Unlike a traditional career day, the Summit blends workshops, conversations, and interactive sessions designed to help students think more expansively about their futures. Topics range from personal goal-setting to emotional resilience and navigating real-world challenges. The environment is intentionally hands-on and practical — students aren’t simply hearing advice, they’re applying it in peer-led exercises and guided breakout groups.
This year’s Summit placed a clear emphasis on resilience, a theme that ran through the sessions and set the tone for the event’s keynote speaker. For many students, the Summit serves as both a mirror and a catalyst: a place where their current realities are acknowledged while their potential is pushed forward with intention.
Metta World Peace: A Powerful Message of Resilience for the Next Generation
Metta World Peace’s keynote was one of the day’s standout moments. The former NBA champion spoke openly about the challenges he faced growing up and the pressures that shaped his early career, grounding his message in experiences many students in the room understood firsthand. Instead of focusing on accolades, he emphasized resilience, mental health, and the importance of seeking support during difficult periods.
As the organization continues expanding its reach across Los Angeles, the message remains clear. When you invest in teens as capable contributors and surround them with mentorship, exposure, and consistent support, they don’t just show up — they rise. The Springboard Summit is proof of that momentum, and for many students, it marks the first step toward a future they may not have believed was within reach.
