For aspiring entrepreneurs with $25,000 to $30,000 in savings and no clear direction, regulated infrastructure businesses like smog check stations offer a smart path to ownership, steady cash flow, and long-term stability. Arian Nazari, founder of Smog King, turned this often-overlooked opportunity into a thriving multi-location enterprise, all before the age of 25.
An Opportunity Hiding in Plain Sight
In a world obsessed with flashy online trends, Nazari took a different route. He saw potential in the mundane: smog checks. Required by California law and backed by over 28 million registered vehicles, emissions tests aren’t going anywhere. With every car needed to comply biannually, the demand is built into the system. A single smog station can easily serve 15 to 25 vehicles per day at a cost of around $60 per check.
“This business isn’t about going viral. It’s about staying valuable,” Nazari says.
Building Without a Safety Net
Nazari immigrated to the U.S. at just five years old. He always had a passion for cars and dreamed of owning a business, but his path wasn’t smooth. At 18, he found himself in court facing criminal charges for spending time with the wrong crowd. He barely graduated from high school with a 2.37 GPA.
But that setback became a turning point. He enrolled in a community college, joined the honor society, and earned a Congressional Award. That commitment led him to the University of Southern California and a renewed focus on building something real.
“Starting a business by yourself can be extremely difficult,” he admits. “You have no safety net. But through years of trial and error, I refined a system that allowed me to step out of the business while pursuing my degree.”
No Tools, No Problem
What makes Nazari stand out in the industry isn’t just his age. It’s the fact that he entered the smog business with little mechanical knowledge. While others chase unstable online ventures, he chose something tested, dependable, and state-mandated. Today, Smog King has multiple locations across California, surpassing many competitors.
“Everyone wants the next big thing. I wanted the next consistent thing,” he says.
His approach shows that you don’t need to be a mechanic to succeed; you need a repeatable system and the willingness to invest.

Why Smog Checks Are a Smart First Business
Smog stations are ideal for first-time owners. The business model requires low technical expertise and offers quick cash flow from day one. With a manageable entry cost of $25K to $30K, it’s perfect for those ready to own a business that doesn’t demand their every waking moment.
According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, regulated service businesses, such as smog checks, have a 40% higher five-year survival rate compared to unregulated ventures. Nazari is clear proof. “I wanted a business I could own—not one that owned me,” he says.
From Owner to Leader
Nazari now mentors others looking to break free from the 9-to-5. His vision for the future? Dominate the smog industry in California and leverage his success to fund global charitable efforts, such as building schools and hospitals.
“If you’ve got $30K and discipline, you can change your life in two years. I’ve done it—and I didn’t even start with that,” he says.
Ready to Take the Leap?
If you’ve got the capital but don’t know where to start, consider investing in infrastructure, not internet hype. Smog stations aren’t just a service; they’re a secure, scalable business move.
“This isn’t a side hustle. It’s a real business. And it’s waiting for the right owner,” Nazari says.
