VinFast and the Road Less Traveled: Early Steps Toward New Horizons

Chapter II: Strategic Transformation

From the bold yet practical vision of Vingroup Chairman Pham Nhat Vuong, VinFast cars first appeared on the streets of America. There, the VF 8 and VF 9 carried carried the determination of a nation, the extraordinary spirit of the Vietnamese people, now embodied in machines designed to meet the world’s highest standards.

The VF 8, in particular, became a quiet testament to resilience, refined again and again, detail by detail, in response to customer feedback until it earned the trust of some of the most demanding drivers in the world.

The Strategic Pivot from the Starting Line

That moment of hard-won success was forged by a strategic turning point. Few recall that VinFast’s initial automotive efforts were not electric at all, but were rooted in three gasoline models: the Lux A2.0 sedan, the Lux SA2.0 SUV, and the compact Fadil. In just three years, nearly 100,000 of these vehicles entered service in Vietnam, quickly becoming top sellers and earning VinFast the affectionate title of a “national car company” among consumers.

The true transformation, however, arrived in January 2022. While established global industry leaders were still hedging their bets, VinFast made a radical announcement: it would cease all internal combustion engine production and transition entirely to electric vehicles.

This was not a marketing flourish. It was an act of radical strategy, a profound commitment that challenged its supply chains, investors, and public perception. VinFast chose to embrace the necessity of the future when others still saw significant risk.

This decision aligned with the accelerating global trend. Since 2022, EV sales have surged, confirming forecasts that electrification was moving from “niche” to “mainstream”. VinFast’s heavy investment in electric platforms, batteries, and charging infrastructure was a strategic alignment with this unstoppable wave.

Building a Seamless Ecosystem

VinFast’s ambition extended beyond replacing the engine. It redefined the product itself, not just a vehicle, but a comprehensive ecosystem. The company detailed plans to install up to 150,000 charging ports across Vietnam, aiming to make charging as commonplace as refueling. Furthermore, VinFast invested in battery research and production, ensuring self-reliance in one of the industry’s most critical technologies. While many competitors focused narrowly on the hardware, VinFast aimed to dismantle every barrier to consumer EV adoption, integrating the means of mobility with the infrastructure of daily life.

The results of this strategic pivot quickly became apparent. In Vietnam, the product line expanded rapidly, from compact city EVs to commercial vans and buses. On the international stage, VinFast unveiled the VF Wild, its first electric pickup, at CES 2024. Rugged yet futuristic, the truck symbolized a willingness to break conventions and build not just what the market expected, but what it might eventually demand.

In September 2025, VinFast reached a new echelon with the debut of its luxury brand, Lạc Hồng, starting with the 900 LX. Luxurious, advanced, and offered in internationally certified bulletproof variants, the vehicle targeted dignitaries and heads of state. It was a clear statement that Vietnam was not just observing global trends, but actively working to shape them.

The Global Ascent

Alongside these product milestones came corporate validation. On August 14, 2023, the Nasdaq bell rang in New York, signaling VinFast’s official entry into the ranks of publicly traded companies. This significant milestone placed Vietnam’s name alongside global automakers. Since then, VinFast has expanded into the U.S., Canada, and Europe, while deepening its presence in Asia’s most dynamic markets, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Middle East.

This transformation turned VinFast from a young domestic contender into a pioneer, a brand willing to lead, even when the path ahead was uncertain. Once called the “national car company”, VinFast has since redefined itself as a global brand whose aspiration is not merely about how the Vietnamese people move, but about how the world can move, faster, cleaner, and greener, toward a sustainable future.

VinFast’s Story in the U.S.: Earning Trust

The pure-electric strategy was the asset that propelled VinFast across the Pacific. The VF 8 and VF 9 became its vanguard in America, guided by the core principle: “Put the customer at the center.”

VinFast’s appeal in the U.S. is built on a philosophy of accessibility and reassurance. The company aggressively lowered the barrier to ownership with competitive financing and leasing options. More critically, it offered an industry-leading warranty: 10 years or 125,000 miles for the vehicle, and 10 years with unlimited mileage for the battery. This was a bold commitment, signaling confidence in durability and providing customers with something rare from a new brand, certainty.

To address “range anxiety”, VinFast ensured its vehicles were fully compatible with America’s expansive charging network. A comprehensive in-app solution helps owners seamlessly plan trips, locate chargers, and integrate electric mobility into their daily routines.

In the U.S., just as in Vietnam, VinFast has chosen the more difficult road, building trust one driver at a time, with persistence, humility, and the conviction that an automaker from a rising nation can offer the world a new, compelling vision of sustainable mobility.

As Madame Thuy Le, Chairwoman of VinFast, once said: “While evolving macro conditions and shifting regulatory landscapes are creating new challenges for the EV industry, our long-term vision to become a global leader in electric mobility remains the same and we are committed to delivering high-quality, accessible EVs that meet the needs of customers around the world.”
