Drawing on decades in life sciences and his own experience as a patient, the Regen Therapy co-founder is working to make regenerative care more credible, consistent, and accessible.

For more than 20 years, Sanjiv Lal built businesses across pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, molecular genetics, diagnostics, and laboratory sciences. Then a significant health challenge placed him on the other side of healthcare.
When conventional approaches provided limited answers, Lal began exploring regenerative medicine as a patient. He encountered science that appeared promising, but he also saw inconsistent manufacturing, limited physician education, fragmented access, and therapies largely reserved for people with substantial resources or the right connections.
That experience helped inspire Regen Therapy, where Lal serves as CEO and co-founder. It also clarified his central belief: Scientific discoveries alone cannot change healthcare. They need credible systems around them.
From Scientific Curiosity to Personal Purpose
Raised in Cleveland by two highly educated immigrant parents, Lal grew up in a home that valued curiosity, education, and personal responsibility. Living between cultures taught him to adapt and connect with people from different backgrounds, while science gave him the foundation for his career.
He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Pharmaceutical Sciences from The Ohio State University, then founded three laboratory businesses and successfully exited two. Across each venture, Lal observed the same pattern: promising science still required quality systems, manufacturing capacity, clinical guidelines, professional education, partnerships, and public trust.
His health experience made those requirements feel immediate rather than theoretical. As he researched regenerative therapies, he became particularly interested in secretome science and the biological conversations taking place between cells.

Listening to the Signals Between Cells
Regenerative medicine has often focused on introducing or replacing cells. Secretome science examines something different: the collection of signals that cells release to communicate with one another.
These signals include growth factors, cytokines, extracellular vesicles, and other molecules that may influence processes related to inflammation, repair, recovery, and function. Lal believes the field may increasingly study these cellular messages, rather than concentrating exclusively on the cells themselves.
Regen Therapy is developing an acellular, signaling-based approach based on that premise. Its work also encompasses physician education, expert-led webinars, digital learning, manufacturing, clinical frameworks, scientific collaboration, and strategic partnerships.
The goal is to give healthcare professionals enough scientific context to critically assess new approaches before introducing them into practice.
Keeping Science Ahead of Hype
Regenerative medicine and longevity attract considerable public enthusiasm, but Lal views skepticism as necessary. Marketing can move faster than evidence, particularly when patients are searching for answers that conventional care has not provided.
Responsible clinical translation, in his view, requires transparency about what is known, what remains under study, and where limitations exist. That distinction matters both for patient safety and for the long-term credibility of the field.
Instead of centering its identity on one treatment or popular trend, Regen Therapy seeks to support the structures that allow clinicians, researchers, and healthcare organizations to evaluate emerging science responsibly.

Expanding the Circle of Access
Lal also wants regenerative medicine to reach beyond wealthy patients, elite athletes, specialized clinics, and those willing to travel internationally for care. Improving access, however, involves more than lowering costs. It requires broader physician knowledge, more consistent manufacturing, stronger evidence generation, and practical clinical standards.
His larger vision reaches beyond extending life for its own sake. Through his work as an entrepreneur, investor, advisor, and healthcare leader, Lal is bringing scientists, clinicians, founders, and organizations into conversations about healthspan: the years people can live with function, resilience, and a meaningful quality of life.
For Sanjiv Lal, the future of regenerative medicine will be measured not simply by what science discovers, but by whether healthcare can responsibly bring those discoveries to the people who may benefit from them.
