Aaron Akins Brings Timeless Soul and Modern Jazz to a New Generation

By The LA Tribune Entertainment Desk

In an era where artists often chase trends, Aaron Akins has built a career by honoring musical excellence while creating a sound uniquely his own.

The Chicago-born singer, songwriter and performer has spent decades captivating audiences with a rich vocal style that blends jazz, soul, R&B and contemporary influences. Now, Akins is stepping into a major spotlight with two highly anticipated performances that are positioning him as one of the most exciting artists on today’s jazz and contemporary music scene.

On June 18, Akins will headline Hollywood’s iconic Catalina Jazz Club with his acclaimed production, Into the Cole: A Tribute to Nat King Cole. Later this summer, he will join an elite lineup at the Los Angeles Jazz Festival’s signature event, Jazz After Dark, sharing the stage with music powerhouses including John Legend, Janelle Monáe, Raphael Saadiq and Parliament-Funkadelic.

For Akins, these performances represent another milestone in a remarkable journey that began in a Chicago church choir.

A Voice Discovered Early

Akins was just 9 years old when someone first recognized his extraordinary gift for singing. Performing in church quickly became second nature, and before long, he became the congregation’s featured soloist, drawing audiences from neighboring communities eager to hear his interpretations of traditional gospel music.

His passion for music eventually led him to Southern Illinois University, where he studied music business. While he excelled on the basketball court, his heart remained firmly rooted in music.

That passion would later bring him to Los Angeles, where he pursued opportunities in entertainment while appearing in music videos, television productions and films, including Black Butterfly and Split Decisions alongside Gene Hackman.

Yet music continued to call him back to center stage.

Finding Inspiration Through Nat King Cole

One of Akins’ most celebrated projects emerged from his admiration for legendary vocalist Nat King Cole.

His live tribute production, Into the Cole, became a standout attraction throughout Southern California and eventually evolved into his first album. Critics praised his ability to honor Cole’s artistry while maintaining his own identity.

Broadway World reviewer Don Grigware described Akins as “striking and charismatic,” noting that he possesses an uncanny ability to capture the vocal elegance associated with Cole without becoming an imitation.

The performances helped establish Akins as one of Los Angeles’ premier cabaret and concert artists, earning him recognition from BroadwayWorld as Best Male Cabaret/Concert Artist in Los Angeles.

Working Alongside Industry Legends

Throughout his career, Akins has collaborated with some of entertainment’s most respected names.

His professional journey has included working with acclaimed director and producer Stan Lathan, known for projects including The Steve Harvey Show, as well as Darryl Jones, the longtime bassist for The Rolling Stones.

Songwriting legend Henry Nemo — whose compositions were performed by Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington and Nat King Cole — personally invited Akins to record previously unreleased material. The resulting album, Mr. Nostalgia & Friends, introduced audiences to songs that had never before been recorded.

Akins later founded NAKICO Records and released a contemporary interpretation of Cole’s classic hit, Mona Lisa, which quickly gained radio traction and entered heavy rotation across multiple formats.

More Than a Jazz Artist

While comparisons to Nat King Cole continue to follow him, Akins has crafted a musical identity all his own.

His sound incorporates elements of jazz, urban contemporary, hip-hop and R&B, creating a blend that resonates with audiences across generations.

One of his signature compositions, God Made Women Beautiful, delivers a message of positivity and empowerment. The song received industry attention and was considered for Grammy recognition.

His commitment to meaningful music has earned him numerous accolades, including the Golden Star Halo Award for his singing and songwriting achievements.

A Career Filled With Memorable Moments

Among the highlights of Akins’ career is a Christmas Eve performance at the Vatican, where he performed for the Pope alongside celebrated artists Siedah Garrett and Darryl Phinnessee.

He continues to describe the experience as one of the most unforgettable moments of his life.

Today, Akins’ music reaches audiences worldwide through Spotify, Pandora, YouTube and other streaming platforms, where his growing catalog continues to attract new listeners.

Most recently, he has generated buzz with his latest single, When Do We Love, featuring Walter and Wallace Scott of The Whispers.

His acting career also continues to expand. Akins portrayed jazz icon Herbie Hancock in Netflix’s Emmy Award-winning comedy series I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson, while his music and performances have appeared across film, television and streaming platforms.

The Next Chapter

As anticipation builds for his upcoming performances at Catalina Jazz Club and the Los Angeles Jazz Festival, Akins remains focused on creating music that connects people across generations.

“I’m honored to headline at the iconic Catalina Jazz Club and join the Los Angeles Jazz Festival lineup, a powerful celebration of musical expression across generations,” Akins said.

That commitment to honoring the past while embracing the future is precisely what makes Aaron Akins an artist worth discovering.

And if his upcoming performances are any indication, audiences are about to discover much more.
