One people, One Jollof Rice: The ILE Dining Experience

Food is a Love Language. Find Love.

In an age where dining out often feels routine, a newer culinary experience in the heart of Los Angeles, California  shatters the mold with its unique blend of flavors, stories, and sensory delights. ILE, the curated restaurant visioned by Chef Tolu “Eros” Erogbogbo, offers an immersive, family-style dining adventure that transcends the ordinary and transforms a meal into a mesmerizing journey. Managed by partner David Olusoga, ILE opens its doors to its guests Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings.

A Space Designed for Connection

Nestled in a loft-style building, ILE’s open, exposed kitchen is the heart of its intimate, dimly lit dining room. The ambiance is set to intrigue, with its lofted ceilings and chic homestyle charm, inviting diners to step away from the hustle of the outside world and into a cozy, communal space. Here, strangers become friends while enjoying a multi-course, family-style offering.

From the moment you arrive, the experience at ILE begins. Guests are welcomed to mingle and connect with one another before the culinary journey starts, fostering a sense of community that is often missing in today’s fast-paced dining culture. The head chef, known as the “billionaire chef” for his opulent yet accessible creations, initiates the evening by burning palo santo while walking around the dining room, signaling that the meal is about to commence, getting diners ready for whatever is to come next. The fragrant smoke engulfs the room, preparing your senses for the delights to come.

Suddenly, the ambiance shifts; bells ring, and soft, Afrobeat rhythms fill the air. The chef is mic’d up, transforming the kitchen into a stage. It’s an engaging touch rarely seen in fine dining.

Chef Eros shares the origins and inspirations behind the night’s menu, told through a story of an individual on a life journey navigating family life, parents and a relationship. This storytelling element is central to the ILE experience, as each dish is a chapter in a larger narrative that intertwines culture, history, and personal anecdotes from the chef’s Nigerian heritage.

Are you at dinner? Are you in a lounge with beautiful music? What are you waiting for next? Is it to hear what happens next in the scene of the story? Is it to taste the next portion of the meal? Not either or but both.

The Experience Begins Before the First Bite

You’re reeled in with the story, and then you can’t help but be pulled into the scents that are coming from the kitchen. And now the meal begins. The first course is an appetizer that never tasted so good. What’s different, beautiful, and remarkable is that you get to see all of the food that is being prepared with the open, exposed kitchen.

The Menu: Bold Flavors, Rich Heritage

The flavors are bold yet balanced, a prelude to the culinary experience that will follow. Throughout the evening, each course is accompanied by the continuing and relatable part of the story, enhancing the sensory experience. The main character is on a life journey, and the diners are too. The open kitchen allows diners to witness the artistry behind their meals, turning the preparation into a captivating performance.

The Hibiscus drink refilled between each drink is a refreshing beverage that cleanses the palate, ensuring that each dish can be fully appreciated on its own merits.

Fusion at Its Finest

The menu is a testament to the chef’s ability to fuse traditional Nigerian and West African flavors with modern culinary techniques, creating dishes that are both familiar yet entirely new.

Among the many highlights is the Unity Jollof Rice, a dish that transcends borders and defies categorization. It is not strictly Nigerian or Liberian but a masterful blend of the best elements of Western African Jollof, resulting in a spicy, yet balanced and flavorful dish that leaves diners wondering, how can I get more? The facial expression reactions around the table range from pure joy to astonished delight, each expression a testament to the chef’s genius.

As the meal progresses, the story unfolds, and the diners are drawn deeper into the experience. The Afrobeat music bounces off the walls, creating a lively yet intimate atmosphere. The subtle clinking of utensils and the sizzling sounds from the kitchen add to the immersive experience. Each course is a revelation, building on the last and keeping diners eagerly anticipating what’s next. ILE’s unique BYOB policy further personalizes the experience.

The final course, a dessert of fried dough balls with berry sauce and a sweet glaze, presented in a whimsical hanging ball, leaves diners both satisfied and longing for just a bit more. It’s a sweet ending to a night of culinary exploration and storytelling, encapsulating the essence of ILE: a place where food, culture, and community converge.

A Meal That’s A Communal Experience

Dining at ILE is about engaging all your senses and connecting with fellow diners in a meaningful way. Whether you arrive alone or with a group, you leave with new acquaintances and a deeper appreciation for the art of cuisine. The experience is perfect for those who seek something more from their night out, a retreat from the typical and a journey into the extraordinary.

When asked about how he even thought of curating a space like he’s done with ILE, Chef Eros remarks, “I wasn’t expecting all of this, but I’ll tell you the truth, it happened organically. We needed a dining table to eat. We needed to tell our story. We needed to be respected. We needed to be understood. And by we, I mean I, my family, my friends from back home, my colleagues, my chefs, my brothers, my partners…a home.”

Chef Eros created a space that he was looking for and couldn’t find out there. During most dining outings, you don’t get to go to a restaurant and eat dining room style and connect with people that you never met before. Because ILE is set across two wood structure dining room tables, guests have a comfortable environment to enjoy food and connect over conversation.

The Philosophy: Love on Every Plate

“One people. One Jollof. If you do not cook with love, do not cook at all. Food is a love language, Find love” shares Eros. Find love. Find unity. Oneness. That’s what it’s all about. It’s beautiful what Chef Eros has accomplished, intertwining story with really good food and cuisine all while helping people feel seen.

In a city known for its dining options, ILE stands out as the epicenter of culture, innovation, and tradition. It’s a place where every meal is an event, every dish tells a story, and every diner is part of a shared adventure. If you’re looking for a dining experience that goes beyond the plate and immerses you in a world of flavor, music, and storytelling, ILE is your destination. This is not just a meal; it’s a memory in the making, a tale told through taste, and an experience you won’t soon forget.

The table is set, the story is ready to unfold, and the next chapter of dining adventure awaits at ILE.
