My Linh Mac: How an Outsider Is Rewriting the Rules of Creativity

If you don’t see a path, carve your own. That’s been My Linh Mac’s way from the start. Born in Vietnam and raised across four countries, she’s had to reinvent herself more than most people do in a lifetime. Each move—Vietnam, Singapore, Australia, the United States—meant starting over: new schools, new cities, and new cultures. Anyone who’s gone through that much upheaval knows it never really gets easier. But Mac’s creative drive never wavered. Art became her anchor, the one constant in a life of change. Her signature style—a blend of structured design and the wildness of fine art—carried her through each transition until it became her calling card as a visual artist and graphic designer.

An Artistic Language of Structure and Chaos

Mac’s creative journey began as a visual artist. Her work is all about the meeting point between order and chaos, structure and spontaneity. She loves to play with materials and mediums, sometimes disguising a piece in one form when it really belongs to another. This chameleon-like approach blurs the lines between disciplines and pushes people to see art—and even design—in new ways. Take her Constellation Series (2022-present), for example. It explores the power of shapes—especially circles—as symbols of eternity and transformation. Through layered textures and depth, she turns a simple form into a meditation on cycles and the invisible forces that shape human experience.

That boldness isn’t just in her art, either. At 13, she left home to study abroad, a risk that’s shaped her fearless approach to both life and creative work and has proven to be worth the sacrifice. Mac’s art has been shown internationally, everywhere from galleries to institutional museums and public spaces in over 15 countries.

A Portfolio That Resonates

Mac’s design work has a similar connection to her audiences. Her portfolio has earned recognition across the globe, with honors including the Indigo Design Award, the DNA Paris Design Award, and the A’ Design Award. In addition to earning acclaim, her designs are also making an impact. Since 2020, she has been a jury member for major awards like The Communicator Award, Davey Award, W3 Awards, and Creative Communication Award (C2A), helping set the bar for industry giants like Netflix and PepsiCo.

Designing With Intuition and Authenticity

When Mac takes on a project, she listens closely—even when her clients can’t quite articulate what they want. Every design begins with an intuitive response, then gets honed with purpose and precision. Her goal isn’t to churn out quick-hit campaigns; it’s to create work that’s both visually striking and emotionally resonant. She brings cultural authenticity to every project, steering clear of cookie-cutter templates and fleeting trends.

Building a Place in the Creative Community

Mac didn’t inherit a network, she built one from scratch. Nearly a decade ago, she started her career with no connections, just her art and her drive. Showing up, putting in the work, and refusing to fade into the background is how she earned her spot. Now, she’s using her platform to help others do the same, whether it’s evaluating six-figure projects for non-profit organizations across the country as a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) panelist or serving as a former brand ambassador for Adobe Express. Mac knows firsthand how tough it is to break into the creative world, and she’s committed to mentoring the next wave of outsiders.

2025 and Beyond

Despite a packed design schedule, Mac hasn’t left fine art behind. This year alone, she’s appeared in exhibitions like SYNTHETICA and ALLTERICA at Silicon Valley’s ArtX Gallery, tackling themes of identity, technology, and surrealism. She’s kept up her international jury work, garnered two more awards over the summer, and is set to showcase her Constellation series in New York’s Times Square and Expo Paris at the world-renowned Carrousel du Louvre this fall. With all these accomplishments, it is easy to forget that she only completed art school months before the pandemic, with no family or professional safety net in a foreign country.

The Rare “Trybrid” and Her Many Hats

Mac has never fit neatly into one role. She’s a visual artist, brand strategist, mentor, critic, and community builder—a true “trybrid” in the creative space. Even when she’s not teaching, her work pops up in educational projects, like a children’s book series on Vietnamese folklore funded by Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE).She’s also left her mark on campaigns for world class institutions like Colorado State University (CSU), proving that her impact goes well beyond gallery walls.

Mac believes that being different isn’t a liability, it’s her superpower. “I’ve always been the odd one out. That outsider feeling never really went away, but it taught me to hustle for every connection and to value mentorship for people who don’t quite belong.” In a field that thrives on fresh ideas, her outsider’s eye is exactly what makes her work—and her story—so compelling.
