Remote Job Opportunities Are On the Decline – Insightful.io Founder Ivan Petrovic Is on a Mission to Change That

Since the pandemic peak in 2020, remote work has slid from 46 percent of job listings to just 26 percent, according to LinkedIn data. At the same time, corporate giants including Amazon, JPMorgan Chase, Dell, Salesforce and AT&T have issued sweeping return-to-office orders.

For many employees, these mandates clash with a hard-won work-life balance: a Harvard-led study finds that 40 percent would take a pay cut to keep working remotely, and Pew Research reports that 60 percent would consider leaving their job if remote work were revoked.

Amid this backlash, Insightful.io and its founder Ivan Petrovic have positioned themselves at the forefront of a counter-movement: proving that flexible, distributed teams can outperform traditional models when given the right tools and trust.

Petrovic launched Insightful.io (formerly Workpuls) in 2016, driven by a simple conviction: managers need clear visibility into remote productivity without resorting to invasive monitoring. What began as a software-development side project has grown into a global platform serving 210,000 users at more than 5,800 client organizations. The company now employs over 100 people across offices in Serbia, California and New York City, generates eight-figure revenues, and sustains 45 percent year-over-year growth.

A key challenge from the start was overcoming the perception that any form of digital oversight equals surveillance. “It is not about micromanagement or tracking minute-by-minute activity,” Petrovic explains. “It is about giving managers an overall picture of what employees are working on, when they are working, and the status of tasks and projects.”

By focusing on aggregated computer-usage metrics rather than webcam screenshots or keystroke logging, Insightful.io turns data into a conversation starter. Managers and teams can see patterns of high collaboration hours or project bottlenecks and address them together.

The timing could not be more critical. Companies such as Airbnb and Dropbox have embraced permanent remote or hybrid models, declaring faith in distributed work. In contrast, the recent wave of return-to-office mandates suggests a broader shift. Petrovic argues that mandates often stem from a lack of trust rather than evidence of underperformance. “Often the issue is not that work is not getting done,” he says. “It is that managers do not have proof that it is, so they default to hasty office-return policies.” His solution: give leaders the visibility they need to answer one question—if you could see clear proof of productivity, would you allow remote work to continue? He reports that more often than not, the answer is yes.

Beyond proving performance, Insightful.io advocates for remote work’s broader benefits. Flexible hours save employees from daily commutes and let them balance family duties—from school pickups to elder care—without sacrificing professional goals. In a high-cost market like Silicon Valley, this flexibility can be the difference between retaining top talent and losing it to more accommodating competitors.

Insightful.io’s next frontier is AI-guided management, a suite called InsightsAI that answers complex workforce questions in real time. “We built InsightsAI to fundamentally change how managers interact with and leverage workforce analytics data,” Petrovic says. He likens it to setting a destination in Google Maps and then letting the app guide you turn by turn. Managers can ask predictive questions—when is this project likely to slip, or which team members show patterns of overemployment—and receive actionable insights swiftly.

Despite current media hype around AI, Petrovic insists the technology is a support, not a headline. “AI is augmenting employees, not replacing them,” he emphasizes. “It automates time-consuming tasks like data analysis so people can focus on deep, meaningful work.”

Industry observers note that no single policy fits every company. Priya Nair of the Future of Work Institute says, “What matters is having tools to measure outcomes, not just inputs.” Insightful.io strives to be that tool, surfacing data that guides mentorship, resource allocation and even hiring decisions. By demonstrating that remote teams can match or exceed in-office productivity, the platform aims to reverse the steep decline in remote job opportunities and set a new standard for workforce management.

Looking ahead, Petrovic envisions Insightful.io fueling a broader cultural shift. He hopes remote roles will rebound beyond pre-pandemic levels, not only restoring the 46 percent peak but expanding flexible work into new industries. As companies grapple with evolving expectations, Insightful.io’s combination of transparency, trust and AI support offers a path forward. In this high-stakes debate over the future of work, Ivan Petrovic and his team are leading the charge—showing that with the right tools, today’s distributed workforce can be tomorrow’s competitive advantage.
