The Los Angeles Tribune International Film Festival proudly recognizes James Cullen Bressack as this year’s International Action Director of the Year, honoring his distinctive contributions to the genre and his dynamic body of work across both film and television.
An award-winning American producer, director, and screenwriter, Bressack’s recent film Darkness of Man, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and distributed by Saban Films, exemplifies his stylistic precision and evolving command of action storytelling. His feature credits also include Hot Seat starring Mel Gibson, Fortress starring Bruce Willis, Beyond the Law with Steven Seagal, and the genre-bending Murder, Anyone? His most recent release, The Workout, premiered at Fantastic Fest, continuing his commitment to bold and original narratives.
At only 33, Bressack is already a 16-year veteran of the industry, having directed his first feature at 18 and now completing his 24th. A two-time Emmy nominee as a producer, he represents a new generation of American filmmakers whose careers span legacy, innovation, and relentless creative drive.
He is the son of three-time Emmy Award-winning writer Gordon Bressack and voice actress Ellen Gerstell, carrying forward a family tradition of storytelling with a singular voice of his own.
