On January 21, 2025, The Desi Divorcee released with its much-anticipated debut, promising to spark conversations that are long overdue. This anthology gathers the voices of 12 women from across the globe, each offering a deeply personal narrative about life after marriage. Beyond its striking title, the book is a profound meditation on resilience, self-discovery, and the cultural nuances that shape South Asian relationships.
Co-edited by Deepika Sandhu, a seasoned writer and advocate for women’s empowerment, and featuring a contribution from Jessie Arora, founder of Atma Things, the anthology dives into complex, multilayered experiences. Together with 10 other contributors, the authors share their personal stories of how they’ve navigated their own relationships in a way that transcends the specifics of marriage to explore universal themes of healing, identity, and empowerment.
Confronting the Stigma of Divorce
“Divorce remains a taboo topic,” says Deepika. “Especially in South Asian culture, where marriage is often seen as the ultimate marker of success for both individuals and their families.” In a community where weddings are celebrated with grandeur and marriage is upheld as the cornerstone of a family’s honor, the dissolution of that union is often met with silence or shame.
Deepika saw The Desi Divorcee as a much-needed opportunity to change the narrative. “Stories like these need to be told,” she explains. “It was a beautiful opportunity to bring together these stories of women who had risen from stigma-laden conversations, families, and situations to step into a new version of themselves.” The anthology features contributors from diverse geographies, including Spain, Tanzania, Denmark, the United States, and Canada. What ties these voices together is a shared connection to their South Asian roots, encapsulated in the term desi, which means “of that place.” This cultural bond allows the book to explore universal themes through a distinctly South Asian lens.

The Courage to Choose Yourself
For Deepika, the book was also a personal journey. Her chapter addresses a narrative that is often overlooked: the idea that women do not need a dramatic reason to leave a marriage.
“What if it is simply a matter of choosing a life that aligns with your spirit?” she asks. This question is central to her own story. At 40, Deepika realized that her seemingly perfect life—a successful husband, an adorable child, and all the outward presentations of success—were not fulfilling. “I was not living authentically,” she reflects.
Deepika’s story challenges societal expectations and encourages women to embrace their agency. “I want to normalize that we can make different choices without needing a reason,” she emphasizes. “There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.”
Her chapter is a call to action for women to step into their power and redefine their lives, even if their marriages appear outwardly fine. It is about making the brave choice to prioritize one’s inner truth over external appearances.

Reclaiming Identity: Jessie’s Story
Jessie’s contribution to The Desi Divorcee was a deeply transformative experience. As a first-generation Canadian born to immigrant parents, she grew up in a home where survival often came at the cost of self-expression.
“I learned to abandon myself to perform for the world,” she recalls. “Little did I know that this dynamic would shape how I chose my friends, partners, and even my career.” Her chapter explores how the patterns of abandonment she witnessed in her family rippled through her own life, influencing every decision until she reached a breaking point.
“At its most extreme, it came down to a stark realization: ‘I do not want to die like this,’” she shares. This turning point came after a night of violence she thought would be her last. The next morning, a friend intervened and pulled her out of the environment, refusing to let her return.
Writing her chapter was like “10 years of therapy in 10 weeks,” Jessie says. It was not just an opportunity to share her story but a powerful act of healing and self-reflection. “I abandoned myself so completely that I did not realize my journey was about coming back home to myself,” she explains.
A Mosaic of Perspectives
The power of The Desi Divorcee lies in its diversity of perspective. The book captures stories of women navigating abusive relationships, interracial marriages, addiction, and complex family dynamics. But it is not just for women who have been through divorce. The Desi Divorce is for any woman, or person navigating personal relationships in their life.

“Contrary to the title, this book is not just about divorce,” Jessie explains. “It is about finding deeper connections with yourself, your partners, your parents, and your community.” For her, the book can even serve as a tool for healing marriages, offering insights into shared struggles and opportunities for growth.
The contributors hope The Desi Divorcee will serve as a tool for healing—not just for those contemplating or recovering from divorce but for anyone seeking to navigate relationships with greater authenticity and self-awareness.
Deepika echoes this sentiment: “We spend so much time in Indian culture talking about weddings but next to no time talking about what marriage is actually like.” The book invites readers to shift their focus, imagining relationships rooted in mutual respect and understanding rather than societal obligation.
Healing Through Shared Stories
Beyond its narratives, The Desi Divorcee represents a cultural shift. Deepika describes it as a breaking of generational cycles: “Our mothers could not, our grandmothers could not—but we can. There is nothing wrong with the way they lived, but it is time to do things differently.”
The contributors also hope the book will help dispel the myth that divorce is the end of a woman’s life. For Jessie, it was the beginning of hers. “The amount of love, joy, and play in my life right now—I did not think I would ever feel this,” she says.
The process of writing and sharing her story has not only transformed her life but deepened her sense of purpose. As a healer certified in numerous modalities, including Reiki, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy, Jessie now dedicates herself to helping others rediscover their personal power.
“Let this book be a starting point,” she urges. “Learn from us. You are not alone. And remember: there is freedom on the other side of fear.”
The Ripple Effect of Vulnerability
One of the most striking aspects of The Desi Divorcee is the vulnerability shared by its contributors. Each story lays bare deeply personal experiences, offering an unflinching look at pain, courage, and transformation. This vulnerability is not only cathartic for the writers but also creates a profound sense of connection for readers. “I think it is really important to recognize that most women in difficult relationships portray themselves as incredibly strong and well put together,” Jessie observes. “Every single one of those women you see has so much more depth, so many more layers and nuances to who you think they are.”
By revealing the humanity behind their struggles, the contributors invite readers to reflect on their own lives and relationships. The book emphasizes that everyone has untold layers, and understanding those layers is key to fostering empathy—both for others and for oneself. This shared vulnerability becomes a tool for breaking down isolation and stigma, a reminder that no one is truly alone in their challenges.
Bridging Generations
The book also highlights the ways in which cultural expectations ripple across generations. Many of the contributors grappled with traditions and values instilled by their parents, who themselves were navigating the pressures of immigration, survival, and societal judgment. For Jessie, these dynamics were particularly significant. “The relationship I had with my parents, with my community, and with my culture led to the abandonment of myself,” she explains. Yet, as she worked through her pain, Jessie came to see her parents’ struggles in a new light, allowing her to heal not only her own wounds but also her intergenerational trauma.
This theme of bridging generational divides runs throughout the anthology. The stories reflect an evolving understanding of South Asian culture—one that honors its richness while challenging the aspects that no longer serve its people. The contributors’ journeys show that it is possible to break free from harmful patterns without losing the love and connection that culture can bring.
A Universal Message
While The Desi Divorcee is rooted in the experiences of South Asian women, its themes are undeniably universal. The fear of change, the longing for authenticity, and the courage to choose oneself resonate across cultures and contexts. For Deepika, the global scope of the contributors—who come from diverse countries and backgrounds—was a deliberate choice to emphasize this universality.
“The contributors’ stories may be tied to a specific cultural experience, but the emotions are universal,” she says. “We hope this book will inspire readers from all walks of life to examine their own relationships and to see the possibility of joy and freedom on the other side of fear.” This universality makes The Desi Divorcee not just a book about divorce or South Asian culture but a celebration of the human spirit’s capacity for growth and transformation.
A New Chapter for South Asian Marriage Stories
Beyond its stories, The Desi Divorcee is a symbol of a larger cultural shift. As Deepika puts it, “This book offers a chance to redefine that narrative by exploring what marriages should be, the possibilities they hold, and what a fulfilling life could look like. Through this exploration, we can also create space for open discussions about divorce, which is ultimately about redesigning the life you currently have. Through the collection of beautiful and diverse stories, we hope people will connect with these experiences in meaningful ways”
For Jessie, the experience of writing and sharing her story has been profoundly liberating. “All the difficult experiences I endured were uniquely part of the stepping stones that shaped my ability to hold space for others. If I had not gone through those challenges—the sleepless nights, the beatings, and the deep pain—I do not believe I would have been able to truly recognize or understand the depth of pain that so many women carry and hide. My evolution as a healer came from moving through that pain and emerging on the other side. It was there that I began to recognize what the pain was trying to tell me and how, in its own way, it was guiding me toward love.”
As the book’s messages reach individuals around the world, it carries the hope of inspiring readers to take their own steps toward healing, whether by reevaluating their relationships or simply reconnecting with themselves.
“Let this book be a starting point,” Jessie urges. “Learn from us. You are not alone. And remember: there is freedom on the other side of fear.”

About Jessie Arora
Unbeknownst to her, Jessie Arora’s journey and struggle with mental health began when she was just eight years old. She was extraordinarily sensitive to energy and felt everything around her deeply. At that young age, she did not have the ability to express what she was experiencing. This sensitivity was compounded by being raised by immigrant parents who were escaping poverty, doing their best to survive while maintaining their cultural traditions. The immense cultural differences, expectations, and emotional weight caused Jessie to act out in ways that confused and frustrated her parents.

Jessie was not cognitively aware of the abuse within her family, but she knew one thing for certain—it did not feel right. By her early teens, she began attempting suicide and engaging in acts of self-harm. Around the same time, she became acutely aware of the spiritual realm, as it began to reveal itself to her. Jessie discovered she had the ability to read energy through foreheads, palms, and auras.
Despite her gifts, Jessie felt profoundly alone, convinced that nobody understood or loved her. Living in this state of isolation for 22 years brought her to her knees time and time again. After enduring 30 years of abuse, disempowerment, and feeling utterly lost in the world, she turned desperately to energy healers of all kinds, seeking relief and answers.
As time passed, Jessie came to realize that what she had once seen as a curse was, in fact, a blessing. Her empathic nature, sensitivity, inability to conform, radical perspectives, and sixth sense were all part of her life’s purpose. Compelled to explore these gifts further, she immersed herself in extensive studies of the mystical healing arts, psychology, and quantum healing.
Fast forward 15 years, and Jessie has earned certifications in Huna, Reiki, Munay Ki, Shamanic Journeying, Spinal Energetics, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy. She is now on the path to becoming a published author.
Helping others heal and transform has become Jessie’s life’s purpose. She finds great joy and fulfillment in walking alongside people on their journeys, guiding them as they come back home to themselves, rediscover love, cultivate joy, and stand confidently in their innate personal power.

Personally, life was not so rosy. As a high-powered, career woman, super mom, and Pinterest enthusiast, on the outside her life looked perfect – nice cars, nice home, nice clothes, nice purses, fun vacations, and lots of smiles posted on social media.
She was winning at the game of life. If she was in a giant football stadium, the big monitors over the field would be flashing in bold caps “YOU ARE KILLING IT.” Problem is, she was not only killing it. It was killing her. None of her checklists, none of her to-do lists, and none of the activities or people that were filling her life were making her happy. She was exhausted, depleted, sad and unhealthy.
She decided to do the only thing a hyper-busy, overachieving, type-a personality could do– schedule a breakdown and manifest a new life. And that is exactly what she did. No guru, shaman, or travel to exotic lands required.
Now through her books, speaking events, and workshops, Deepika helps others break free from the limitations of societal expectations and step into the life they were truly meant to live. Through her work, she has empowered thousands of individuals to reclaim their joy, authenticity, and personal power.
Having discovered first hand the power of one’s story to change lives, Deepika has embarked on a new journey.
