In the heart of West Hollywood, a night filled with music, joy, and community support unfolded at the second annual Broadway Benefit Bash on Monday, Nov 25, 2024. The event, held at the iconic Chapel at The Abbey, was more than just a Broadway-inspired celebration; it was a testament to the hard work and community-focused vision of Walid Chaya, founder of Studio for Performing Arts LA.
Walid, a respected director, actor, and entrepreneur, is known for his unwavering dedication to fostering talent and creating spaces for artists to thrive. His studio, which offers dynamic programs for actors of all ages, has become a cornerstone of the LA arts scene. With over 17 years of experience in acting, directing and coaching actors, Walid’s mentorship extends beyond the studio. He is a driving force in creating events that not only showcase the arts but give back to the community, as evidenced by this year’s Broadway Benefit Bash, themed ‘Wickedly’ for this year’s celebration.
A standout feature of this event was Walid’s hands-on involvement, both as a host and a performer. The evening’s live performances — many of which were inspired by beloved Broadway musicals like Wicked and The Wiz — brought together talent from across the LA theater community. Walid’s own performances, including “He’s The Wizard” and “Ease on Down the Road”, captivated the audience, showcasing his impressive vocal abilities and stage presence.
Beyond the stage, Walid’s passion for community was evident. Through Studio For Performing Arts LA, Walid has worked tirelessly to support actors, particularly those from diverse backgrounds. His commitment to inclusivity was highlighted by the BroadwayWorld Award-winning MENASA Diversity Showcase, which celebrated performers from the Middle Eastern, North African, and South Asian communities. This event, much like the Broadway Benefit Bash, reinforced his belief that art should be accessible and inclusive for all.
The success of the Wickedly Broadway Benefit Bash was not only measured by the incredible performances but also by its ability to raise donations for the LA LGBT Center. The event more than doubled the donations of the previous year, with generous contributions of canned food and gently used clothing, which were later collected by the Center’s Pride Pantry team. This heartwarming outcome highlights Walid’s ability to create events that inspire both joy and generosity.
For Walid, it’s clear that the success of these events goes beyond entertainment. His vision is to foster a culture of giving back, where the arts serve as a catalyst for positive change in the community. As the event wrapped up with an open mic Broadway karaoke, it was evident that Walid’s vision for a vibrant, supportive arts community in LA is just getting started.
