A World Without Veterans: Today’s Headlines in an Alternate Reality

November 11, 2024 —A Veterans Day Reflection

BREAKING NEWS: HUMAN RIGHTS AT RISK IN EUROPE AND ASIA AS AUTHORITARIANISM SWEEPS GLOBE

This morning, reports from Berlin, Warsaw, and Tokyo confirm a chilling reality: authoritarian regimes are spreading unchecked across Europe and Asia, tightening control over millions. In Berlin, public dissent has been banned for years, and the few who resist have reportedly “disappeared” overnight. Journalists, once the watchdogs of society, are now under state contrail, their pens silenced, their screens devoid of independent thought.

Asia faces a similar fate, with democratic voices quashed across the continent. Without the intervention of veteran-led alliances in WWII and post-war peacekeeping forces, the globe has descended into an era of suppression and surveillance. Countries we once thought of as strongholds of freedom and progress are now bastions of control, where free speech is punishable, personal rights are obsolete, and the very concept of democracy is a faint whisper from a distant past. Citizens from Paris to Seoul live in daily fear of surveillance, distrust festers, and any hint of resistance is met with swift, merciless state retribution.

‘INTERNET BLACKOUTS BECOME COMMONPLACE AS STATES CONTROL FLOW OF INFORMATION

In the past decade, “internet blackouts” have become a daily reality across the globe, from Asia to parts of South America and, increasingly, North America. Without veteran-driven advancements in technology, the internet is a tightly controlled tool for state propaganda, its original democratic potential lost in the absence of protections and infrastructure initially built through military-led research. Today, any dissenting opinion can disappear from the digital world in seconds, with governments keeping an iron grip on what can and cannot be said.

For billions, the internet is no longer a tool of connection or innovation but a weapon of control. Simple searches for “freedom of speech” or “human rights” can lead to immediate detention in parts of the world. Education, journalism, and creativity are systematically stifled. A generation that once dreamed of limitless knowledge and connectivity finds itself in a dark age, with people turning to underground networks and whispered conversations to access any form of unsanctioned information.

HUMANITARIAN CRISIS LOOMS AS DISASTER RELIEF FALTERS ACROSS THE GLOBE

In California, fires rage unchecked. The once robust, rapid response teams—originally built and strengthened by veterans—have disbanded. Firefighters, stretched beyond capacity, beg for assistance, but none arrives. Across the U.S., coastlines continue to erode as hurricanes batter unprepared towns. Emergency management offices are skeletons of what they could be, unable to match the expertise and coordination that veterans once brought to these crises.

And it’s not just America. In Haiti, recovery from the earthquake in 2010 never came. Families still live in tents, children have known nothing but scarcity, and infectious disease rips through already weakened communities. The same is true in the Philippines, where typhoons have decimated entire regions with no coordinated international support. The absence of a structured disaster response, once led by military forces with veteran expertise, means millions remain without clean water, medical supplies, and basic shelter after every catastrophe. The death tolls from these disasters have grown exponentially—numbers we once believed were preventable are now part of everyday reality.

ECONOMIC DECLINE: BUSINESSES CLOSE AS GLOBAL TRADE FALTERS, COMMUNITIES LEFT IN POVERTY

In the U.S., entire regions face unprecedented unemployment. Without veteran-owned businesses, there’s been a significant collapse in small business infrastructure across the country. The estimated $1 trillion in annual revenue these businesses once contributed is gone, taking with it millions of jobs. In small towns, the economic decline is palpable: boarded-up shops, abandoned factories, and main streets now silent. The veterans who once led local businesses, hired fellow veterans, and gave back to their communities are no longer there, leaving a vacuum in leadership and economic resilience.

On a global scale, trade has slowed to a crawl. The security that allowed safe international commerce—veteran-protected shipping lanes, coalition-led peace missions—has evaporated. Piracy has resurged off the coasts of Africa and Asia, as once-secure waters are now playgrounds for hostile actors. With safe international trade at risk, food shortages are rampant, goods are increasingly unaffordable, and economic progress is a memory. Once-comfortable middle-class families in Europe and the U.S. find themselves rationing basics, and luxury items have all but disappeared.

LIVES LOST DAILY AS TERRORISM AND VIOLENCE PLAGUE UNSTABLE NATIONS

Without veterans’ intervention in the Middle East, terrorist organizations have found fertile ground in places once liberated by allied forces. Large parts of Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan are now controlled by factions hostile to both local populations and the international community. The absence of stability and military expertise has allowed extremism to flourish, with civilians paying the price. In Europe and the U.S., citizens live in heightened fear as attacks have become a regular occurrence—public places are targeted weekly, with casualty counts rising steadily.

While the world watches, the spread of extremism crosses borders, leaving entire regions in a state of permanent conflict. Families in peaceful cities like Boston and London grow accustomed to daily searches, curfews, and the omnipresent fear of attack. Without veterans who once served as peacemakers and protectors, violence has seeped into every corner of society, undoing decades of hard-won security.

MEDICAL AND SCIENTIFIC ADVANCEMENTS STALL AS MILITARY-LED RESEARCH DISAPPEARS

The healthcare system, once known for its rapid advancements, is paralyzed. Military-driven research that produced trauma care innovations and life-saving technologies is nonexistent. Hospitals across the world struggle to keep up with emergency cases that would once have been routine. Techniques to treat traumatic injuries have regressed, and thousands of patients suffer unnecessarily, left without the sophisticated care veterans pioneered in the field.

At a time when global pandemics loom, the lack of military-led medical research into infectious diseases is felt deeply. The capacity to respond quickly, to create new vaccines or treatments, is limited without the partnerships veterans helped forge between military and medical research. Public health, once a fortress of progress, now stumbles in the dark, losing battles that were once preventable.

AN UNIMAGINABLE WORLD — OR IS IT?

This vision of our world—where citizens cower under authoritarian regimes, disasters spiral unchecked, and scientific progress falters—isn’t simply hypothetical. It’s a potent reminder of what veterans have safeguarded and built. Their sacrifices haven’t only shaped history; they’ve created the freedoms, safety, and stability that allow us to live in relative peace, opportunity, and prosperity.

As the day when we honor veterans come to a close, many of us may feel we’ve done our part thanking them. But at The Los Angeles Tribune, we don’t just thank them for serving, we acknowledge that without the long history of the selfless service of the our Veterans, our world would be unrecognizable—far darker, more dangerous, and stripped of the freedoms we often take for granted.

The legacy of every Veteran is woven into every facet of our lives, from the safety of our cities to the knowledge and progress that propel us forward. So, as this day ends and we move on from celebrating Veterans Day, let us remember the invaluable impact of every Veteran’s sacrifice and let’s recognize how deeply our lives are shaped by their courage, their selfless service, and their love for our country.
