TiECon West 2024: A Catalyst for Local and Global Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Sustainable Growth

Newport Beach, California, transformed into a nexus of innovation during the TiECon West 2024 conference, a gathering defined by dynamic collaboration between TiE SoCal, TiE San Diego, and TiE Orange County. This flagship event brought together entrepreneurs, investors, and thought leaders under a unified mission: to propel entrepreneurial growth through mentorship, education, and networking—a vision aligned seamlessly with TiE Global’s expansive goals. In the face of economic challenges and changing market trends, the conference highlighted how a strong, organized network can support and drive new ideas and growth.

A Legacy Rooted in Vision and Global Connectivity

Since its founding in 1992 in Silicon Valley, TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs) has evolved from a modest network of business leaders into the world’s largest nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship. Over three decades, it has grown to encompass 66 chapters and over 20,000 members globally, offering a robust platform for mentorship, education, networking, and funding. This legacy and vision were embedded into the experience at TiECon West 2024, where attendees not only explored the intricacies of scaling businesses but also connected with the broader purpose of driving societal progress through innovation.

As TiE SoCal Board of Director Member and Chairman of Investors Institute, Dhaval Kapadia articulated, “The conference was all about encouraging entrepreneurs to elevate their businesses. We had keynote speakers and panel discussions covering everything from marketing strategies and technological infrastructure to financial readiness. These elements create a comprehensive framework that empowers entrepreneurs to scale successfully.”

The Conference’s Global Ambitions and Local Impact

The conference brought together over 300 business owners, founders, C-suite executives, and investors for a day filled with keynotes, panel discussions, and networking. TiECon West 2024 empowered TiE’s global mission: nurturing entrepreneurship through a powerful blend of local focus and international reach. The event emphasized how localized entrepreneurial growth can ripple outward, influencing international economic development and fostering a more interconnected business world.

The conference’s program was diverse, featuring industry visionaries such as Tony Smith, CEO of Restaurant365, a cloud-based software platform specifically designed to help restaurant owners and operators manage their business operations more efficiently, who chronicled the journey from startup challenges to expansive business management. Panels on technology, led by figures such as Mario Leone, Director of Chapman University Entrepreneurship, examined strategies for leveraging outsourced partnerships and systems architecture—crucial for businesses in a digital-first world. Financial thought leaders, including Maeesha Merchant, EVP & CFO of The Colburn School, and Anupam Satyasheel, Founder & CEO of Occams Advisory, dissected the complex art of fundraising and financial structuring, offering roadmaps for sustainable growth.

The Marketing and Customer Service Panel, starring Michelle Ranavat, Founder & CEO of RANAVAT, and Chris Hetherington, Parul Somani, Founder & Executive Coach at Silver Linings, a former NFL veteran and CEO of Fathead, focused on refining go-to-market strategies critical for scaling in today’s fast-paced business climate. The conference’s robust agenda, 40 exhibits from sponsors, and networking breaks offered attendees ample opportunities to learn and connect.

TiE SoCal’s Pivotal Role in Expanding TiE’s Mission

Venkatesh Chakran, Chair of TiECon West 2024 and CEO of Saguna Consulting, reflected on the event’s goals and success: “The main objective, being a business growth summit, was to ensure we had high-quality content for the event, along with top-tier speakers covering every aspect of business growth, whether in finance, technology, or go-to-market strategies. Bringing in the right keynote speakers was my primary focus…. Bringing together over 300 attendees from different chapters and various industries on a Friday, dedicating their entire day to this event, was nothing short of remarkable. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with attendees noting the value of detailed presentations and engaging discussions.” The synergy between regional chapters underscored TiE SoCal’s strategic commitment to community and shared growth through immersive and educational experiences.

Fostering the Next Generation of Changemakers

TiE’s commitment to mentorship extends beyond current business leaders to the next wave of innovators. The TiE Youth and TiE University programs, which support students from junior high through university, are designed to instill entrepreneurial values such as resilience, strategic problem-solving, and responsible risk-taking. “When young people learn these values early, it becomes a powerful tool for growth,” Kapadia noted, emphasizing the strategic importance of equipping youth with skills that align with the demands of an evolving economic and entrepreneurial landscape.

Kevin Parikh, Chairman and CEO of Avasant Group Companies, also highlighted the generational shift in entrepreneurship: “Gen Z naturally incorporates social value into their ventures. They see it as part of who they are, not an added benefit. This intrinsic drive for social good positions them to build companies that not only profit but contribute positively to society.”

A Platform for Sustainable Progress
The conference underscored TiE’s role as a steward not only of business success but also of sustainable entrepreneurship. This commitment was emphasized by TiE Global’s recognition as a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Kevin Parikh highlighted the importance of this alignment: “One of the great things about TiE is that it centers on entrepreneurship, but also focuses on fostering socially sustainable entrepreneurship. This year, one of the significant steps TiE took was becoming a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—all 17 of them. This is significant because, across our 66 chapters and over 20,000 members globally, we have programs for women, youth, mentorship, and universities. Having all those chapters aligned and operating in a unified manner helps us measure our contributions to the community not only locally but globally, all in line with the SDGs. This alignment is vital as it elevates our mission and enables entrepreneurs to integrate these SDG goals into their own businesses. One of our primary objectives is to train entrepreneurs on building sustainable businesses that work toward the 2030 goals.”

Parikh is the Chairman and CEO of Avasant Group Companies, an author, and a keynote speaker. He serves on the Board of Trustees for TiE Global, chairs the CEO Board of Advisors at the UCLA Innovate Center, and sits on the Board of Counselors for the USC Center for Political Future. During the conference, Parikh highlighted the United Nations’ recognition of TiE Global’s Social Responsibility and Sustainability program.

Parikh’s multifaceted leadership roles at USC and UCLA further demonstrate his dedication to fostering research and practical solutions that marry technological innovation with community-focused outcomes. “At the UCLA Innovate CEO board… we drive investment in research around next-generation topics like Quantum Artificial Intelligence and bio-engineered technologies,” he shared, signaling his commitment to advancing critical academic-industry partnerships.

As someone who has been involved with TiE for over 23 years and has witnessed its evolution, Parikh reflects, “While achieving success is essential, it’s crucial for TiE entrepreneurs to understand that success is a balance between creating personal value and contributing to their community. Our mission, as a nonprofit business association, is to unite talented individuals to learn from one another and support their communities.”

Pioneering Programs that Shape the Future

Reflecting on TiE SoCal’s future, President of TiE SoCal and Founder & CEO of Beyond Codes, Gaurav Kumar, shared, “We are committed to funding not just scaling businesses but also pre-seed ventures and incubations. Supporting women-led startups and diverse entrepreneurial voices makes business sense and embodies our core values.”

TiE SoCal provides mentoring, guidance, and one-on-one sessions with founders. Kapadia shares that “the biggest need today is funding. We have a program called TiE SoCal Angels, through which we ensure that startups receive the financial resources needed to move to the next level. This program is particularly exciting because we get to participate in entrepreneurs’ journeys and share in their experiences, which is fulfilling since we are making a tangible difference. Mentoring and guiding the next generation are fantastic, but having ‘skin in the game’ takes it to another level. The SoCal Angels program has been a great success, and over the next two years, we plan to scale up those investments, backed by a solid roadmap we are eager to execute.” Through various investments and by connecting entrepreneurs with venture capital, TiE facilitates outcomes for growth.

Catalysts for Entrepreneurial Insight and Business Growth

What TiE does for its community members—including women and youth—truly fuels the entrepreneurial ecosystem. It’s vital and valuable for the community, bringing different players together in an intentional, unified way. TiE SoCal nurtures the TiE Women program that supports female entrepreneurs, “complete with an active Women’s Fund for investments. These initiatives provide additional resources and strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem,” says Kapadia. The program not only underscores TiE’s dedication to inclusivity but also demonstrates its ability to champion innovation through diverse perspectives.

During the summer of 2024, TiE SoCal’s TiE Women program team reviewed hundreds of applications, selecting 17 finalists and ultimately four women entrepreneurs who were recipients of funding for their business ventures, while the TiE team continued to mentor the others. The 17 finalists will have the opportunity to attend the TiE Global event in Bengaluru, India, where representatives from all 66 chapters will gather. “Supporting a woman entrepreneur who was struggling just a few months ago and seeing her succeed on the global stage is an incredible achievement, and we’re proud to play a part in that,” shares Kapadia. The TiE Global Summit, the annual flagship conference for entrepreneurs, will be hosted in Bengaluru, India, in December. Bringing together TiE members from all around the world, the TiE chapters collaborate to bring amazing content, including speakers, mentoring sessions, and emerging business trends to all in attendance.

A Vision for the Future: Connecting Local Strengths to Global Opportunities

One of the most powerful takeaways from TiECon West 2024 was the reminder that local innovation and global outreach are two sides of the same coin. When entrepreneurs in Southern California leverage the resources of the TiE network—spanning cities like London, Delhi, Tokyo, and New York—they tap into a collective pool of knowledge, investment, and strategic partnerships that amplify their potential.

“Once someone becomes a member of any chapter, they gain access to thousands of members globally,” explained Venkatesh. “This global reach allows entrepreneurs to navigate new markets seamlessly, whether they are targeting Africa, Canada, or anywhere else. The support system TiE offers is unmatched.”

As the conference drew to a close, the message was clear: TiECon West 2024 was not just a one-day moment but an impactful experience for TiE members focused on growing innovation, collaboration, and sustainable progress. The synergy between regional chapters, underscored by a commitment to inclusivity and global cooperation, sets the stage for further collaboration between local and global chapters focused on stewarding ventures that drive entrepreneurship as both an economic driver and a force for social good.
