Crowning Change: How Dedra Tufon, Ms. Black USA 2024, is Redefining Beauty and Advocating for Mental Health

On August 3, 2024, Dedra Tufon, the reigning Ms. Black California USA, was crowned Ms. Black USA 2024 in Washington DC. For Dedra, that crown and title comes with an impactful platform – one she plans to use to redefine beauty standards, advocate for mental health awareness, and bring vital conversations about body image to the forefront.

Dedra’s journey to the national stage began long before the applause and confetti. As a young Black woman growing up in the early 2000s, raised during the peak of toxic diet culture and body negativity, Dedra silently struggled with body image issues that went unnoticed because eating disorders were not openly talked about in her community.

This personal struggle would shape Dedra’s life in profound ways. Journaling became her refuge, and over the years, her pages filled with reflections on body image, mental health, and the relentless pursuit of self-acceptance. Her first journal was given to her at the age of nine, and since then she’s filled countless pages with her writing. Looking back, she reflected on how deeply ingrained negative, toxic, and problematic views about her body and beauty had been from such a young age. But Dedra didn’t stop at journaling. She turned her private reflections into public advocacy, becoming a trailblazer for body diversity and mental health awareness, particularly within communities of color.

Dedra’s book, Beauty in Body Diversity, is both a personal narrative and a rallying cry for inclusivity, encouraging women to reject societal pressures and embrace their unique beauty. Dedra’s message is clear: beauty is not one-size-fits-all. Through her acronym, BEAUTY—Being Effortlessly Authentic and Unapologetically True to Yourself—she teaches young women to celebrate their differences rather than conform to unrealistic ideals.

As Ms. Black USA, Dedra now has the national stage to take her advocacy even further. Her platform, “Feeding Hope,” addresses the under-reported but very real prevalence of eating disorders among Black women. Statistics show that African Americans are 15% less likely to seek help for mental health issues, often because they don’t see their struggles reflected in mainstream narratives. “I am incredibly honored to be named Ms. Black USA 2024,” Dedra Tufon shared. “This title is more than just a  crown—it’s a platform to continue advocating for those who feel unseen and unheard. I am committed to using  this opportunity to promote mental health, body positivity, and the power of diversity, and I hope to inspire others  to embrace their true selves.”

Dedra’s mission is deeply personal. A survivor of an eating disorder herself, she knows the long, difficult road to recovery and the importance of early intervention. In her role as a teacher, she saw firsthand how young girls in her classroom, even at an early age, began grappling with the same body image struggles she had faced. This inspired her to create resources that would spark conversations about self-esteem and self-worth before the damage could take hold. Her commitment to these issues goes beyond words. Fifty percent of the proceeds from Beauty in Body Diversity are donated to the National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA), and in 2024, she served as the keynote speaker at the Los Angeles NEDA Walk. As she stood before the crowd she was reminded of the power of using her voice to make a difference.

And that’s exactly what she plans to do as Ms. Black USA 2024. Dedra’s vision includes launching workshops and public speaking engagements focused on leadership, mental health, and body positivity. Her aim is to empower young women across the country to embrace their true selves and to break the silence surrounding mental health in communities of color. “This crown isn’t just a symbol of beauty,” Dedra says. “It’s a platform to be a voice for those who feel unseen.”

In a world where representation matters more than ever, Dedra Tufon is using her position to challenge outdated narratives and create space for those who have been left out of the conversation. Her victory as Ms. Black USA is not just a personal milestone—it’s a victory for every woman who has struggled to see herself reflected in society’s definition of beauty.

Dedra’s journey has only just begun, but her impact is already being felt. Whether through her workshops, public speaking, or the pages of her book, she’s feeding hope into communities that have long been starved for recognition and support. And with the national title now hers, Dedra’s voice is one that will continue to echo far beyond the stage.
