Education, Compassion, and Community: MD4-L2 Lions’ Commitment to Youth Shines in ‘Back 2 School Backpack Drive

Los Angeles, CA – August 31, 2023 – In a remarkable display of community unity and generosity, MD4-L2 Lions Clubs International has once again stepped forward to make a profound impact on the lives of our local future leaders. Today, we are proud to announce the success of the “Back 2 School Backpack Drive,” a monumental initiative led by the newly elected District Governor, Scarlett Ku.

Under the visionary leadership of District Governor Scarlett Ku, the MD4-L2 Lions Clubs International has embarked on an ambitious mission to uplift their communities through eight dynamic programs: Youth, Disaster Relief, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Vision, Humanitarian, Hunger, Environment, and City of Hope (Diabetes). In the coming year, the spotlight will shine brightly on the “Youth” program, an endeavor initiated by 2nd VDG GST Angel Peil and fervently supported by her dedicated teammates: GST Jany Huang, GST Larry Liu, GST Pepper Chan, and Vice Cabinet Secretary Pete Chao.

The mission of MD4-L2 is clear – to improve the lives of youth around the world through education, promoting positive choices, shielding them from negative influences, encouraging learning through service, and nurturing both their minds and bodies. The impact of their projects, such as the Choose Kindness Project, Social-Emotional Learning, Lions Quest, and their support for Leos Green Lions, has been transformative.

In a heartwarming display of unity, MD4-L2 has joined forces with clubs across its district to support local students in the “Back 2 School Backpack Drive.” Over 720 backpacks were generously donated to two school districts, El Monte City and Whittier, carefully chosen for their predominantly mid to low-income demographics. These backpacks, filled with stationery and other learning essentials, will bring smiles to the faces of countless children and ensure they are well-equipped for the school year ahead.

The donation ceremony was attended by students, school district representatives, and Lions volunteers. Distinguished guests included U.S. Congresswoman Grace Napolitano from the 31st District of the United States Congress, CA Senator Susan Rubio from the California Senate, Whittier Mayor Joe Vinatieri, Superintendent Dr. Brad Mason, Ed.D., West Whittier Principal Patricia Leano, and Cortada Principal Carl Caston, who all expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the Lions D4-L2 District’s contribution.

The event also saw the unwavering support of Lions International Past International Director PID Larry Dicus, LCI Past Council Chairman PCC Roger Powell, D4-L2 1st VDG Kaiser Mo, and beloved Past District Governors Ohrmund, Oviedo, Khan, Louie, and GMT Nancy Chan, among many others.

Behind the scenes, the packing of these vital backpacks was executed with precision and care. Harvest Victory factory provided the location for this noble endeavor, and Sunmerry Bakery (with locations in Temple City, Arcadia, Rowland Heights, etc.) generously donated delicious pastries to sustain the hardworking volunteers.

MD4-L2 wishes to extend its heartfelt appreciation to all the clubs that contributed to this heartwarming initiative, including Arcadia Champion, LA Elite Lions & Leos, LA Diamond, LA Overseas, Whittier Host, LA Chinese, San Gabriel Taiwanese, Temple City Centennial, LA Sunrise, LA Royal, Alhambra, Monrovia, HH East Valley, LA Grace, LA Envision, LA Morality, Arcadia Host, LA Art League, Montebello, LA HH Centennial Lions, Boyle Heights, Maywood, East Whittier, Bellflower Noon, and West Covina.

The success of this initiative would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of numerous dedicated individuals who dedicated their time and energy to make a difference in the lives of local youth. Their names and contributions are a testament to the power of community: Angel Peil, Larry Dicus, Roger Powell, John Peraza, Pete Chao, GST Jany Huang, GST Pepper Chan, Cindy Farber, Eric, Daniel, and many others too numerous to list.

MD4-L2 Lions Clubs International has once again demonstrated their unwavering commitment to the betterment of their communities. In this remarkable Back 2 School Backpack Drive, they have not only equipped young minds with the tools they need but have also enriched their spirits with hope, kindness, and the knowledge that they are valued members of a caring community.
