Equality is in the Details”– Nikola Sekulovic, Century Park Law Group

Century Park Law Group currently ranks as one of the fastest-growing personal injury law firms in California and the practice recently took a huge step towards delivering the best experience for clients and staff with the creation of a diversity and equality committee. The move will help in promoting the principles of fairness and equity as preached by the firm. Nikola Sekulovic Of Century Park Law Group Launches Their Diversity and Equality Committee.

The discussion surrounding a more equitable and fair work environment has remained on the front burner for years, as more businesses seek to harness the features of workplace diversity. According to a report published by builtin.com, diverse companies enjoy 2.3 times higher cash flow per employee, with racially and ethnically diverse companies 35% more likely to perform better. Despite the amazing stats supporting equality and inclusion in the business environment, several communities have remained underrepresented in the workplace. However, the Century Park Law Group team is looking to contribute to the alleviation of this scourge, as the firm recently inaugurated a diversity and equality committee.

Championed by Nikola Sekulovic, experienced marketing professional and Director of Marketing and Business Development at Century Park Law Group, the committee will set the firm on the path to becoming a more involved with community as well as help everyone feel represented at Century Park Law Group.

Nikola Sekulovic was recently highlighted in The New York Times magazine as part of “The LGBTQ+ People in Business” as well as by “PR LGBTQ Week”.

Preferred pronouns?

He/him/his.

Why pronouns are important in the workplace?

Nothing may be more personal than the way in which people refer to us through our names and pronouns. Using a person’s chosen name and desired pronouns is a form of mutual respect and basic courtesy. Everyone deserves to have their self-ascribed name and pronouns respected in the workplace.

What is the main goal of the DEI Committee?

The goal of the committee is to improve diverse hiring practices, support diverse business enterprises, enhance job descriptions and improve development processes. It will also support the firm’s inclusion goals, such as inclusive communication, encouraging employee awareness, creating a culture of trust and conversations around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).

What are some of the way companies could create employee awareness?

Starting the dialog before anything, a lot of companies are diverse, but they are lacking inclusion, equality. That way creating an awareness training in a must, as well as ongoing education process that helps educate employees. Supporting LGBTQ employees can look different from company to company, but the main goal is making sure employees are uplifted and treated like a valued part of the office community regardless of how they identify.

Is Legal world generally regarded as an LGBTQ-friendly industry?

I’m fortunate enough I work at a Law Firm that welcomed and celebrate my contributions as an LGBTQ+ practitioner – but unfortunately, that isn’t consistent across the industry landscape.

I remember coming into the offices of CPLG for the first time for my interview and seeing gender inclusive bathroom signs, it immediately made me feel more comfortable and helped me relax, therefore I was able to communicate and represent myself better. As not just a gay man but visibly gay men there is always that element of “what if they are not LGBTQ+ friendly” lucky this was not the case with Century Park Law Group.

What challenges, if any, did you face as an LGBTQ professional in business world?

I have always been extremely ambitious and determined, a lot of times I had to create many of my own opportunities. I always believed that my work product will open more door than nepotism, hetero favoritism ever will.

Century Park Law Group helped me feel safe and supported before anything, I think everyone deserves to feel safe and comfortable at their workplace/ space. We are a diverse firm that welcomes and celebrates its employees.

What advice would you give young LGBTQ people in business?

Always know your rights! Support your fellow LGBTQ+ peers and help create the best workplace, culture and community, where every employee feels uplifted and valued by their colleague and company. Center yourself around people that not just tolerate you but also celebrate you and your work and always unequivocally believe in yourself!
