The Power of Positive Self-Talk

Has there ever been a time where you doubted yourself or have felt negatively about your life? You might’ve expressed to yourself a feeling of hatred, sadness, or felt incompetent. Don’t worry, you aren’t alone in those feelings, but you must understand that over time negative self-talk can really affect your mental health, and worsen your state of mind. The more you tell yourself that you can’t do something or that you hate yourself, the more you manifest that idea into your head. Always keep in mind that the energy those negative words carry can eventually come back and bite you.

So what does positive self-talk sound like? It can range from saying “I love myself!” to “I’m really proud of who I am.” If you can find one way to look at yourself in a positive light, then you are doing it right. Try writing down some positive affirmations in a journal in the morning so they can immerse themselves in your mind throughout the day. You can even do it in front of a mirror when you are brushing your teeth.

No matter how you choose to do it, just do it.

The key is to remember that whatever you consistently tell yourself about yourself becomes your reality. You MUST keep a consistent positive dialogue.

A lot of people might feel like it’s self-deception to say “I love myself” if that’s not how you’re feeling at the moment, but you must remember that tough situations are temporary. Another key? Change your perspective. Some simple things to remember is that you aren’t always going to feel okay or perfect because you are human. Some days are tougher than others and life will life on you, that’s just a fact. While it is crucial to keep pushing on, understand that everyone has a limit and that is also okay, but don’t allow yourself to feel down for too long. Feel the emotions, but don’t stay there. Positive self-talk can work and look different to everyone and once you start, you might not even notice that you started doing it involuntarily. Before you know it, this habit will become second nature.

The power of positive self-talk can change the way you view yourself day today. Don’t underestimate it until you try it. It could possibly help turn a negative day into an appreciative one. Write some encouraging sticky notes and put them on your mirror or even change your lock screen to a picture with positive sentences!
