Technology is the application of scientific knowledge that changes the human environment. As cities grow, there’s a need to introduce a new set of technologies and systems that will enhance their survival in the future and helps make the city more accessible, smarter, and easier to manage.
A smart city uses information and technology to enhance the quality of life, the efficiency of urban operation and services, and competitiveness while ensuring that it meets the current and expected needs of the people with respect to economic, social, and environmental aspects.
Key Technologies In Smart City
Below are key technologies that make a smart city work.
- Smart Infrastructure
Having a smart infrastructure enables a city to move forward with other technologies. It collects data, processes information, takes appropriate action completely autonomously and dynamically, and uses the data collected to make meaningful changes in future city plans.
- Smart Transportation
Smart transportation uses new and emerging technologies to move around a city more conveniently, cost-effectively, and safer for both the city and the individual.
IOT devices and 5G communication technology provide for inexpensive sensors and controllers that can be embedded into nearly any physical machine to be controlled and managed remotely. In addition, 5G communication provides high-speed data communications to manage and control transportation systems in real-time with minimal latency.
- Smart Data
A smart city collects massive amounts of data to be analyzed to make it useful to its city and people. Many smart cities have adopted open data portals to publish city data online so that anyone can access it freely and use predictive analytics to assess future patterns.
- Smart Energy
In smart cities, both commercial and residential buildings are now more efficient and use less energy. The energy used is analyzed, and data collected to help improve energy usage further.
- Smart IOT Devices
Smart cities use IOT devices such as connected sensors, actuators, beacons, lights, and meters to collect and analyze data. IOT allows sensors to collect and send data about the city-state to the central cloud, which is then mined or processed for pattern extraction and decision-making.
- Smart Mobility
Smart mobility is the use of different modes of transportation for moving around the city. In smart cities, technologies like the use of vehicle-to-infrastructure(v2i) connectivity with ultrasonic, radar, and camera communicate information in real-time to drivers and commuters on the network helps avoid dangerous activity before drivers are visually aware.
Emerging Technologies In Smart Cities
Emerging technologies are being used to power smart cities across the globe while their application is already put into practice in the real world and will continue over time. Some of these technologies are;
- Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence has been introduced to public services in traffic control, automated fare collection, and parking automation. For example, in the UK, AI controls traffic lights to improve safety and reduce congestion.
- 5G Popularization
The use of 5G wireless technology was rolled out in 2019.5G technology has a combination of high density and low latency, which will transform smart cities.
- Big Data Analytics
Smart cities generate a large amount of data hence the high demand for data analysis. Examples of emerging technologies in big data analytics include self-service data preparation, the cloud, the internet of things (IOT), data-as-a-service, and embedded analytics.
- Machine Learning
Machine learning algorithms can convert the data collected from smart cities by IOT devices into useful information for future decision-making in smart cities.
