Catching up with Carlita Cosmetics

What inspired you to start a Cosmetics Line?

I’ve always been attracted to beauty at a very young age. I remember when my dad worked for a magazine company when I was a child and he used to bring fashion magazines home to my mother. And he would bring teen magazines home to the kids. I always gravitated to the fashion magazines that he brought home to my mother. I just remember being into makeup, and how it was applied. I also loved doing hair at a young age. So as I got older I knew I wanted to be in the beauty industry. So I went to Cosmetology School got my license and I became a working Professional Cosmetologist for many years.

Then I worked my way toward educating myself on how to start a Cosmetics Line. So I got really serious about it and I pretty much made it happen for myself.

Would you say it was a challenge starting a Cosmetics Line?

No, it wasn’t necessarily a challenge because I wanted it so bad and I dreamt about it for so long. And I was a Cosmetologist for so many years so it was really not that difficult starting it.

Did you get a lot of support from family and friends?

That’s a good question. Yes and No. Yes I had “some” family and friends that supported me like my mom Linda Smith, my cousins Faye, Romey, Jorien, Shawn, & Laurie. And my best friend Keacha, as well as friends I grew up with. But surprisingly there were family members that I grew up with closely that didn’t support me at all, and I have lipsticks named after them. Most people would be flattered by the thought of having a lipstick named in their honor surprisingly I guess some aren’t.

Although that could be very hurtful to a new entrepreneur and it could destroy your dreams per say. But for me I just learned from it. It just made me more determined to succeed at it and not give up. In fact I’ve gotten strength from it.

At the end of the day it is okay if everyone does not want to see you succeed as long as you have that determination in you to succeed. It’s not going to kill you it’s only going to make you stronger.

That’s great that you named your lipsticks after individuals. Let’s talk more about that. What made you go in that direction?

Well it was a no brainer, it was something that I just really wanted to do for myself, it came from the heart I just wanted to let the people in my life know just how much they meant to me. Whether you’re a family member or a friend and I’ve even named lipsticks after people that I’ve met along the way that made an impact in my life.

And I did not want my Cosmetic Line to be like all the other cosmetic lines out there. I just wanted to create something unique something that I could really cherish and call my own.

I really appreciate you sharing that with us. What advice would you give someone who’s thinking about starting a cosmetic line in the near future?

I would say please make sure you’re passionate about it, and do not get discouraged if you don’t have the support of those who you would automatically think you would get support from. Join social media groups, go to seminars, educate yourself as much as you can, and keep the faith and don’t give up. Like any job you’re going to have your good days and your not so good days. But if you hang in there you will reap the benefits of your hard labor.

I hear Megyn Kelly and other celebs are known for using your Cosmetics please tell us more about how you managed to get your products in the hands of celebrities.

I was basically just determined and I took advantage of social media and and all that social media had to offer. And celebs would also come across my page on social media and they would DM me for products. sometimes if I see a particular celebrity that I thought would appreciate what my brand was about then I would reach out to them and surprisingly a lot of times they would hit me back immediately. How I got my lip products on Megyn Kelly was through her celebrity makeup artist Vincenza. Vincenza and I became friends through social media and I end up naming a lipgloss after Vincenza. I strongly believe that God align you with the people that you are supposed to connect with. And I feel like that’s what happened in this case.

What are you currently working on now?

My luxury skincare line that I’ve been working on for awhile now. And releasing my Men Accessory Line that was supposed to launch last year but due to covid I had to put it aside for a while. We are also working on my new website that will be relaunching soon. So I have quite a bit on my schedule right now I am extremely busy. Just trying to improve and continue to reach my goals.

It’s obvious that you have worked very hard to get to where you are today. Let’s close by letting the reader’s in on a secret about you that may be surprising.

Well people would probably be surprised that I do my own hair and makeup as well as all my photography in every single Carlita Cosmetics ad you see online and on social media. I think people would really be surprised by that because a whole lot of work goes into that. The average person would have a team of people. But my team is just me.
