AI In Smart Cities

By Salah M. Alajeel

Artificial intelligence refers to developing systems that can perform tasks that would normally be set apart for human beings intelligently. Systems with artificial intelligence can collect data, analyze it, and make intelligent conclusions from the data.

Since Ai mimics human intelligence, it helps tremendously in the automation of tasks. Artificial Intelligence can accomplish tasks that experts will struggle within very short periods. The ability of Ai machines to learn makes them perfect for tasks that require enormous processing power.

Due to the advantages that artificial intelligence has over traditional systems, it has become an important tool in creating smart cities. Artificial Intelligence has given technology the efficiency that humans could only dream of achieving.

There are several applications of Artificial Intelligence in smart cities;

  1. Smart Cameras
  2. Smart Sensors
  3. Traffic Management
  4. Smart Meters
  5. Waste Management
  6. Smarter Governance
  7. Security Systems

Smart Cameras

Ai has been used in cameras in cities to create better surveillance systems. Ai cameras offer amazing facial recognition capabilities for a more efficient system. This helps in recognizing the perpetrators of crimes, thus improving security in smart cities.

Smart Sensors

Smart sensors have become popular in smart cities. Ai technology is used to power most of the smart sensors in a city. Ai has helped produce sensors that get activated only when a certain condition is met. For example, a smart sensor tasked with collecting data on earthquakes in a city wouldn’t be active all the time. A tremor would trigger its activity. This helps save energy and sometimes the manpower that would otherwise be wasted in waiting for an event with a very low chance of occurring.

Traffic Management

Traffic can be a nightmare in cities. Ai has enabled the development of traffic signals and traffic monitoring sensors that help detect traffic buildups and decongest roads before a traffic snarl-up occurs. This makes traffic and transport management highly efficient and effective in their response.

Sensors equipped with Ai technology also analyze parking options, find parking spaces, and direct drivers to them to avoid the clogging of traffic ways. Ai has turned this delicate operation into a fast and effective way of getting people around cities.

Waste Management

Cities produce enormous amounts of waste. Cities could easily be overrun by waste if there wasn’t a waste management system. But most waste management systems are not as effective as they should be. That’s why Ai was integrated into some waste management systems. Ai has made it possible to break down some of the garbage that cities produce into harmless compounds, use some to produce energy, and manage the rest’s effect on the environment.

Security Systems

Ai has been integrated into security systems to help make them more streamlined, more efficient. Ai is used in security systems to surveillance, process data, make predictions, and in some cases, facial recognition. These uses of Ai in security create more streamlined security systems, systems that are harder to beat. Smart alarms and motion sensors have helped stop more crime than foot patrols have in a long time.

With all this, it is easy to see the impact ai has had on smart city inhabitants’ lives. Soon, it will be hard to imagine cities without Artificial intelligence.
